Cornerstone Bible Church at The City Mission

Serving Cleveland’s Hungry, Hurting, and Homeless

For more than ten years Cornerstone Bible Church has been serving men who are participating in the City Mission’s, Crossroads Emergency Shelter and Residential Christian Discipleship Program.
On the first Saturday of each month different groups from Cornerstone have traveled to the corner of East 55th Street and Carnegie Avenue in Cleveland to minister to the physical and spiritual needs of disadvantaged men.

The City Mission opened in October of 1910, in a former saloon on Superior Avenue. After moves in 1913, 1926, and 1964, The City Mission moved to its current location at 5310 Carnegie Avenue in 1992.

The Crossroads Emergency Shelter provides daily chapel services, food and hygiene items, health care, and spiritual guidance. The Residential Christian Discipleship Program includes Christian counseling, job readiness programs, continuing adult education, health and fitness, camp experiences, as well as meals, family support, and after care.

According to TCM’s web site, last year Crossroads provided more than 59,000 meals and sheltered more than 1,000 men. It is these men, that Cornerstone’s Home Fellowship groups, families, Worship Team and Youth Ministries groups have had the privilege of serving on those Saturday evenings.

Saturday Evenings

A typical Saturday evening begins early as home cooked meals are being prepared for up to about fifty men in the modern commercial kitchen. As the work in the kitchen continues, just a short distance away on the other side of the dining room, preparations are being made for the 7:00pm chapel service. This is often a time of spirited worship, testimonies, special music, and most important a challenging and encouraging message from the word of God.

Other ministries of The City Mission include, Laura’s Home, a long term residential facility for women and children, Pathways Youth Ministries, Jail and Prison Ministries and the Grand Valley Christian Retreat and Camp.

TCM’s web site states that, “The City Mission is a multi-facted ministry reaching out to meet the needs of thousands in Northeast Ohio. In addition to providing physical assistance, we also offer disadvantaged people the opportunity to move from lives of poverty and dependence to stability, growth, and productivity. As a Christian ministry, we meet spiritual needs by introducing them to the life changing gospel of Jesus Christ.”
